An elegant Roman jewel from the 2nd century AD, set with two ruby cabochons and presented on an 18ct gold and natural ruby bead necklace.
About
The gold disc would have originally have been worn, over 1,800 years ago, as an earring. Jewellery was particularly important to Roman women because it was considered to be their own property which was kept independently of their husband's wealth. They had the right to buy, sell and barter their own jewellery.
A jewel like this was not just a beautiful adornment but a means of retaining financial independence and personal agency. This disc of gold was literally feminine power to its last wearer.
Centrepiece
The earring features delicate twisted gold ropework and six studs around the outer edge. XRF tested for authenticity, the gold purity is around 9.5ct. Acquired from a private ancient jewellery collection.
