Persian rock crystal seal, 4th - 5th century AD.  Set in a one-of-a-kind 14ct gold pendant with a handmade 14ct gold chain.

About

The seal features an ibex galloping amongst stars with a crescent moon overhead.  The dome-shaped rock crystal was originally meant to represent the sky - the 'dome of the heavens' as it was termed.  The ibex represented the wearer and, by climbing on mountains up to the stars, was overcoming difficulty and succeeding in their spiritual journey .

The Sasanians believed in a battle between good and evil.  They focussed on accomplishments, responsibility and actions as the way to take part in this battle and they found meaning in doing what was right.

The seal expresses many of these beliefs and was likely an inspiration to the original wearer.  It is a beautiful piece of art that speaks of the liberty and personal aspirations possible in 5th century Iran.

Centrepiece

In the Sasanian Empire (3rd - 6th century AD), personal seals were common throughout society and were often worn as jewellery.  The finest seals were not just a legal signature but also a personal avatar expressing identity, values and feelings.

This exceptionally fine seal features a beautiful carving that is best viewed in person.  The muscles, ribs, hair, ears, hooves and mouth of the ibex are all detailed and the depth perspective has been carved too.

This artefact was acquired from an old collection of eastern seals and the authenticity has been independently confirmed.
