Persian carved stone bear pendant, 4th - 5th century BC, mounted on a 14ct gold and natural turquoise necklace.

About

An exquisitely carved jewellery piece from the Achaemenid Empire, featuring a bear in red stone with a fissure of crystal that runs like lightning through the eye, muzzle and teeth.

The Persian people felt affinity to nature and often featured animals in seals and jewellery as an embodiment of noble qualities or values.  The bear was symbolic of strength, courage and protection in the ancient world.  The pendant was likely worn originally as a personal expression of identity.

Set in a one-of-a-kind 14ct gold design featuring a natural turquoise stone and 14ct gold custom clasp.  Presented on a Japanese kumihimo silk.

Centrepiece

The artefact was previously owned by a published expert and member of the Antiquities Dealers Association and has been independently authenticated.
