Solid gold Viking ring from the 9th - 10th century AD, set in a one-of-a-kind 18ct gold and ruby necklace.
About
In early medieval times jewellery was often gifted and worn to memorialise a bond between two people. This twist ring was beautifully wrought from tapered gold bar and crafted to bind two pieces, reminiscent of lives intertwined.
We present it in a handmade pendant featuring an 18ct gold cuff and a blood-red ruby drop to signify eternal bonds. A custom made necklace of 18ct gold and natural ruby roundelles has been added.
One available.
Centrepiece
The Viking ring dates from as early as 875 AD and tests as 92% pure gold. The gold has a particularly yellow, buttery colour. It was unearthed in England in 1986, at an important location of the ancient kingdom of Mercia. The ring weighs 7.7 grams.
The item was found prior to the 1996 Treasure Act and hence, though recorded in the antiquities finds database, was not claimed as national treasure. A similar ring is in the British Museum collection and published in Graham-Campbell, J., 2011, The Cuerdale Hoard and related Viking-Age silver and gold from Britain and Ireland in the British Museum, London: British Museum Press.
